British Eventing and event organisers are investigating the possibility of replacing Burghley with an alternative 5 star event. This strategy is subject to FEI approval and to overcoming the logistical and financial issues associated with implementing such an event at short notice. With the competing interests of the Olympics and European Championships for team horses the viability of a substitute event is by no means guaranteed in terms of potential entries. However, it is important that the opportunity to compete at the top level is maintained if there is sufficient demand from riders and owners. Further, the impact of 5 star qualified horses with no obvious autumn competition route will be considerable on the 4 star events planned for later in the season. However, If there is less than the anticipated demand for a 5 star it would be better to focus on alternatives.
British Eventing has asked the EHOA to canvas the opinion of owners of qualified horses on these topics. Achieving a satisfactory outcome is contingent on understanding the competition plans and ambitions of both riders and owners.
If you would be interested in contributing to a discussion please e-mail by return. If there is sufficient interest BE will set up either an online group meeting or correspond with the owners group by email. The time frame for this meeting is short – say next week – so please reply promptly if of interest to you.
