Update from British Eventing

Dear Members,

This week, our eventing family suffered an immeasurable loss with the tragic passing of rider Sarah Yorke at Aston-le-Walls on Friday. Sarah was a much-loved member of our community, and our hearts go out to her family, friends, and all who knew her. Their grief is unimaginable, and they are in our thoughts at this profoundly difficult time.

Eventing is more than a sport – it is a community bound together by shared passion, dedication, and care for one another. In moments like this, we are reminded of the strength of that bond, as we come together to support and comfort those who are hurting. The outpouring of love and tributes from across the eventing world has been deeply moving, and I know it will mean so much to Sarah’s loved ones.

As a mark of respect, there will be a two-minute silence held at 12 noon at all British Eventing fixtures this Saturday, giving us all a moment to come together in remembrance of Sarah and in support of her family and friends.

I also want to acknowledge that such a loss can affect many of us personally. If you are struggling, please remember that support is available. The British Eventing Support Trust offers a 24/7 mental health helpline, where you can speak to a trained professional in confidence: 07780 008877.

While no words can lessen this heartbreak, I want to reassure you that British Eventing remains unwavering in our commitment to safety. One loss is one too many. We continue to learn from every incident, working with experts, officials, and organisers to implement measures aimed at reducing risks wherever possible. This work is ongoing, and we will not falter in our determination to make our sport as safe as it can be.

In the days ahead, let’s hold Sarah’s family in our thoughts, look out for one another, and remember that our greatest strength is the compassion and solidarity we share.

With heartfelt sympathy,

Rosie Williams
CEO, British Eventing

BRITISH EVENTING STATEMENT

ASTON LE WALLS HORSE TRIALS

It is with the deepest sadness that we confirm Sarah Yorke (GBR), 37, suffered a fatal accident while competing at Aston-le-Walls Horse Trials in Northamptonshire, England, on Friday 8 August 2025.

Medical professionals attended immediately following her fall at fence 3; however, tragically, she could not be saved.

Her horse, MGH HERA, was assessed by the on-site vets, walked back to the stable, and is uninjured.

Rosie Williams, Chief Executive of British Eventing, said: “On behalf of everyone at British Eventing, I would like to express our deepest condolences to Sarah’s family and friends. The thoughts of the entire eventing community are with them at this incredibly difficult time.”

A full review of the incident will now be undertaken by British Eventing in line with our established protocols.

To respect the family’s privacy during this very sad time, no further details will be shared.

We appreciate this is a deeply difficult moment for the eventing community, and we encourage everyone to support one another. The British Eventing Support Trust Helpline is available 24/7 on 07780 008877 for anyone who would like to talk to a trained professional.

Judy Gardner

We were sad to hear about the death of EHOA member Judy Gardner.

She was an event horse owner for many years having horses with Lucy Jackson, Tina Cook, Georgie Dalton, Claire Fielding and her granddaughter Sophie.

She had many horses on British teams and at Badminton and Burghley. She died at the end of July aged 88 after a long battle with Parkinsons Disease.

Our thoughts are with her family and many friends at this sad time.
